Creating a buzz for good

Almost 90% of wild plants and 75% of the world’s leading crops depend on animal pollination, and one out of every three mouthfuls of our food depends on pollinators such as bees. As part of Komatsu’s 2023 Live you Dream program, the Komatsu New Caledonia team invested in four beehives for the local branches.

In New Caledonia, bees play a vital part in pollinating the mangrove population. Mangrove trees provide food and revenue to local communities who depend on them for their income. The Komatsu hives will help grow bee colonies, support pollination and produce honey for employees to share and take home to their families.

Jean-Christophe (JC) Nyssens, Regional General Manager for Komatsu New Caledonia, says the Live your Dream grant gives their team the opportunity to do some good for the planet and the local community, while providing a lot of fun for employees.

“Over the past few years, I have had a lot of interest from my colleagues about introducing a beekeeping activity. I have some knowledge about it and was willing to share with the team, and we took the opportunity to use the Live you Dream grant to set up our hives, educate the team and provide them with kits to look after the colonies,” JC says.

“We have eight staff volunteering to look after the hives at four different branch locations across the region. We’re hoping to have them buzzing and ready to harvest honey by the end of the season.

“The Live your Dream program is an amazing initiative from Komatsu to give back to the community. I wanted to be part of it and demonstrate how we can effectively take action locally and do some good.”
